Field Notes

Characteristic fall weather. Driving along the coast, I happened to notice many boats at a distance. An unusual sight at this section of the coast and I'm assuming those were fishing vessels. Some sort of ocean current must have brought in a good load of fish. A nice hike and few hops on the rocks, and I end up at this location. The combination of a 3 stop neutral density and a graduated filter yields the desired effect.

The plan was to shoot black and white super long exposures due to extreme overcast weather. This one shot was a digression. The composition focuses on simple wave patterns. Nothing spectacular going on in the dull sky and hence eliminated from the composition. The rock on the far right, one with all the birds, makes for a good subject for a standalone picture.

Philosophy

The vicious cycle

A hobby is defined as ~ "an activity or interest pursued for pleasure or relaxation and not as a main occupation". It's very counter productive when a hobby becomes an obsession and you start taking things seriously. The process has the following pattern; To escape from the daily routine and work, you pick up a hobby and begin indulging in it. At first, this brings great relaxation and enjoyment and a sense of accomplishment. As time progresses, you learn the techniques and get better at it. This serves as motivation to invest more time and resources. Your creations are seen and credited by your friends and family. Enjoyment turns into obsession and you want more visibility for your work. Now this is where everything falls apart. You expose your work via whatever medium you choose. This can have 2 possible outcomes; (a)Your work is outstanding, unique and of professional quality - everyone loves it, (b)Your work goes unnoticed, just like you dropped it into an unknown abyss. If latter is the outcome, you become disappointed and improve your efforts at getting good.

What you've managed to do at this point, is convert your hobby into a botheration. Something that was meant to provide relaxation, now, seems to be draining too much of your time and energy. Back to square one, you need something new to take your mind off your hobby and relax.

Solution

This is where you stop and re-evaluate the situation. Keep your hobby a hobby and put it in it's place. Don't get too serious with it (unless of-course, you really want to!). Don't get too bogged down comparing your work against someone who pursues your 'hobby' for a profession for obvious reasons. They are professionals, this is what they do for a living and they better be good at it.

Happened to me and it took a while to unhook.

Creating an abstract image and permitting the viewer to mentally complete the picture is a challenge. We have all been preconditioned since childhood to absorb information that's fully formed. Birds, people and sunset; the combination always makes for an interesting scene. This frame captures everything except for the Sun, which I leave to your imagination. The sunrise in my part of town is seldom beautiful and it's mostly cloudy in the morning, but occasionally the clouds yield for a spectacular scene ( which I shall post later).

Poor man pays twice

Every one learns this the hard way. I learnt it the hard way. When I started photography, my mindset was a little different. On one hand, I was neverready to spend a lot of money on buying filters but on the other hand, wanted all the filters to get creative. In the end, settled for a set of cheaper filters. Excitement slowly faded off into disappointment; photo after photo, I was never able to attain that professional finish (the irony when hobby turns into an obsession, about which I'll write later).

Cheap filters are CHEAP!, When you fit a cheap filter in front of an expensive lens the net result is a sub standard picture. It's like fitting low quality tires on a super expensive car, the net result is a bad driving experience. As soon as light passes through the front element, in this case the cheap filter, you have essentially ruined the quality of light entering into your system. Now no amount of expensive lens or megapixels can recover that. Lack of sharpness, weird color tinges etc... It takes a lot of effort and sometimes impossible to fix this in post process. After having gone through this phase I ended up spending money to buy the good quality expensive filters.

The moral of the story: If you cannot afford a good quality filter, don't settle for a cheap one.

An interesting landscape, I stumbled upon during my explorations. The place is not accessible during high tide and you need to be in and out before the tide rises. This picture was shot towards the evening. The rock formations here are pretty interesting, especially the big one dead center in the picture. This one has smooth parallel cuts and stands out. All the other rocks have a smooth pebble like texture. This picture was shot with a 10 stop Nuetral Density filter. One of the uses of a Neutral Density (ND) filter is to stop down motion and thereby create a lovely blurring effect especially with moving water.

Taking pictures close to home

Making a good photograph takes time. For a landscape photograph - Light, Location and Composition are perhaps the most important considerations before pressing the shutter. It takes time and considerable amount of work and waiting to combine all these parameters in the correct proportion to realize the picture in your mind's eye. Location and composition is something we can pick and choose but getting the right kind of light is matter of patience and waiting. Making a great picture is also a function of recursion and refinement based on previous outcomes. It's common to return to the location several times over to refine the photograph. Due to all these considerations, it is, without a doubt, beneficial to shoot closer to home than anywhere else.

I love landscape photography and up until the recent past I've always considered not being able to travel for photography a big handicap. But personal experience has forced me to reconsider my disposition on this matter. The photograph posted above was shot at a location not too far away from home and I do live in a major metropolis. It's just a matter of exploring places nearby where you live. If you plan on travelling for photography, make sure you visit fewer locations and spend more time at each location.

Caveat

But we are all hobbyists, aren't we ? And by nature, revert to what we love doing the most; talk about hardware, equipment and techniques (personally this is what I love too...). Once in a while we do manage to snap some great pictures, but ehh... we'll let professionals worry about making great pictures. That being said, no professional or corporation ever invented anything (well, they are great at marketing!). Great inventions were always made by hobbyists working in garages during their free time...

Long exposure photograph shot 1 hour after sunset during a full moon. Shooting at a lower aperture lets you create star style diffraction effects on light sources. Follow this link for an excellent article on creating sun stars. A manual exposure using BULB mode at native ISO (200, to reduce noise).

The Art of Imagery

Photographers were making great pictures decades back even without all this technology. Now, with all that's available, we still manage to make pictures that are not noteworthy. So obviously there is more to making an image than just a great camera and/or software.

Inclusion vs Exclusion

A common mistake most of us make is to obtain the widest possible lens and create a photograph that tries to include everything possible. How often has this created an image, which you can proudly consider a 'keeper' ? The problem with 'Inclusion' is 'dilution'. The concept is simple and straightforward, it's like making lemonade; The more water you add the less sweet it becomes. The more you try to include in your image, the more you end up diluting everything in your image. The difference between seeing something in real life vs photograph is 'Scale'. 'Scale' is the reason why a landscape that looks outstanding in real life turns out to be not-so-great in a photograph. Understanding 'Scale' is crucial to making a great image. A small photograph logically cannot contain all the details of a grand landscape because everything is going to be scaled down to a level where individual details can no longer be resolved.

When shooting a grand landscape (for that matter, any photograph) spend some time trying to frame your image to try and isolate a small section which looks the best and make this the subject. Build your image around this subject; include only those elements that enhance the subject such as leading lines etc.

The plan was to get down to the beach and shoot some waves but it was too crowded and a whole bunch of professional photographers shooting models. A shutter speed of 1/4s seemed right to smooth out the rough ocean but still preserve a little bit of texture and wave action.

11 - Be inspired...

This image was a shot a long time back. A totally uninspiring windy day at the ocean front. Waves splashing on the rocks, dispersing a fine spray of salt water. This was one of the ten or so pictures made that day. Nothing technically spectacular, just a simple shot and an extremely simple composition. Abstraction is a powerful thing. Abstraction converts your photograph from a two dimensional array of facts to an idea (or concept). A good idea sticks on and grows. It involves the viewers thought process to mentally create a complete picture fortified by the abstract concept.

When everything else seems to pull you down, you search for inspiration in your own work. Share your inspiration with the world, keep your fears to yourself. Be inspired, create...

Counting Stars, How many did you count ?

A long exposure photograph which combines static and dynamic elements. Typically, long exposures yield well to simple compositions. I often have to keep reminding myself; Ultra Wides are NOT for landscape photography and to never use an Ultra Wide unless one can get real close to the subject. A simpler composition with a closer crop including just the mid ground and background (more sky and ocean) is something to try.

Any situation that may cause debris/water/fine particles to land on the front element of the lens or filter will affect your image quality. This depends on the aperture used. The effect of debris is inversely proportional to the aperture. Higher the aperture (lower f number such as f/2.8) lower is the effect on image quality. Lower aperture means a higher DOF which causes objects nearer (and further) from your plane of focus to render sharper (this includes debris/dust/water drops on the front element). Make sure you constantly check and clean the front element when shooting under such situations, say, at the beach with heavy winds and fine water particles from wave splashes. Stopping down the lens to a small aperture (mostly to increase DOF) has an adverse effect on image quality. Craig Tanner provides an excellent in-depth explanation on his site, "The Mindful Eye" (highly recommended!).

This image was shot before sunrise. Manual exposure using bulb mode using an Ultra wide lens. Ultra wide lenses are tricky, it requires you to get real close to the subject. If used correctly, it'll place the viewer right at the spot! For this picture, the camera was not more than 1 feet from the subject. What I was hoping to find was a small piece of drift wood, but this was what I found instead. A small subject in the foreground might have been an overall better composition for this scenario.

Focusing in low light can be problematic. If you have the option of visiting the site during daytime for a compositional survey, you can compose your shots and note the focal lengths beforehand. When you return to take the picture, set your camera to manual focus and adjust the focus ring to the predetermined focus value. If a site survey is not possible, simply set the focus to infinity and stop down the aperture to f/8 or f/11 or if the light is extremely low open it up to f/2.8. The difference in a single stop may result in a difference of several minutes of shutter speed.

Previsualization

Much like everything else in life, unless you know where you want to go, you'll never get anywhere. The same holds for photography. Beginning with an idea is important, often called 'Pre-Visualization'. Experienced people have written about it (and I'm barely beginning to follow...)

This image was shot a while back. It was supposed to be partially cloudy but it turned out to be otherwise. The power of suggestion can be extremely useful when making a photograph. There are cases where presenting a partially formed concept leads to a better image because this forces the viewer to mentally fill in the blanks. This was shot at around 5:30AM. The wooden log in the foreground serves as an entry to the image and helps to create depth in the picture.

Sunset at Pt. Dume, Malibu. Shot at 7:20PM. The camera has a limited dynamic range compared to the eye and you will not be able to capture all the details in one shot. In this case the sky and land are on 2 different ends of the scale. There are 2 different ways to handle this; Using a graduated neutral density filter or bracketing your shots. The method you use will depend on the scene. Filters mostly for a dynamic scene and bracketing when working with stationary objects. Remember to shoot in RAW format, this permits maximum flexibility during post process.

A little bit of inspiration

'The Mindful Eye' is a website I recently stumbled upon and absolutely love the site. Craig Tanner has tons of well prepared material (documents and videos) and is an excellent source for learning the fundamentals. Read this article titled 'The Myth of Talent' by Craig, it most certainly inspired me and has got me thinking differently.

This image was shot at around 5:00 PM. Since the sun sets directly opposite to this point of view, the capture after sunset rarely looks good. Evening time before sunset produces the best result. Colors aren't that spectacular but the basic shapes in the scene are interesting. The basic composition consists of Parabolic shapes; The ocean and cliff sort of form a 'Yin Yang' with contrasting colors. A near to far perspective with repeating patterns (For instance the cliff in the mid ground and mountains in the background are repeating patterns, watch carefully and more patterns will be evident.)

For those who have been to this blog before, you'll notice, all of the older pictures have been removed. I look at my older pictures and none of them seem good anymore and I've decided to redo them. The nature of my job makes it very difficult to travel for photography and hence stuck with the same subjects and landscapes. In the process of recapturing all the old scenes, I'm starting to include field notes.

Field Notes

This image was shot at 5:50AM 30 minutes before sunrise at Malibu, Los Angeles. As far as the scene itself, nothing really grand. The reflection is what I thought would make the scene a little bit interesting. Absolutely clear day and no clouds, no drama. Up in a distance, notice the metropolis smog which results in a thick red orange hue right above the horizon. The place itself was infested with mosquitoes and it was quite annoying taking pictures from here. Unfortunately though, I forgot to reset the ISO after having changed to 3600 (to shoot some birds). Most of the other pictures were pretty much trash.
